About the IFA

Thank you for your interest in the Indiana Fire Association. We are a brotherhood celebrating over a 125 years of service, dedicated to protecting life and property in the Indiana and surrounding area since 1878.

Reaching the milestone did not come easy. Through hard work and dedication of past and present members, we have experienced tremendous growth. People such as Alex Stewart, which was the father of the late hometown actor Jimmy Stewart, have helped forge this department into what it is today.

The Indiana Fire Association maintains an active roster of 84 members, which include both men and women. The association has one fire chief and three assistant chiefs. The department is broken down into four companies that contain 20 firefighters. Each company has one captain and two lieutenants. We maintain a fleet of 10 fire fighting vehicles including engines, tankers, rescues, and aerial pieces. Each year the department responds to between 500-700 calls.

For an application you can call the fire station during the day or write to us and someone from the membership will contact you.  Some qualifications you must meet are as follows:  You must be over 18 years of age at the time of applying;  You must physically live in the Indiana Borough, White Twp, and parts of Rayne Twp. and Armstrong Twp.

When you have completed your application, and had a mandatory back-ground check, it will then be turned over to an investigating committee. At that point the committee will review your application. You will then be contacted for an interview with the committee. The interview will consist of questions regarding your interest in the fire service, any past experience in the fire service, and some general questions about yourself as a person.

Upon the committee's positive review of your application, you will be voted on and placed into a respective company. You will then be on probation for a period of not less then a year.  While on probation you will be required to take the Essentials of Firefighting course, along with a Hazardous Materials Recognition and Identification course.

You will be asked to follow the orders of the officers, and abide by the constitution and the by-laws of the Indiana Fire Association. It is also your duty to attend regular monthly and special meetings, along with monthly practice which on the third Thursday of each month. During the year your company will have 3 drills which you are required to make at least two.

Upon a satisfactory completion of your year probation you will then be accepted as a qualified member of the Indiana Fire Association.
